Fifth Annual Morel (“merkle”) Mushroom event with morels, mead, and music . Entertainment was provided both by Hallberg (playing a dulcimer), the A+ band, and Ben Mason and group. Those who attended the festivities were able to taste “mead” (made of honey and said to be man’s first fermented drink) and the much-sought-after (but hard-to-find) morel mushrooms.
At a certain moment in the fife of the mushroom filaments, under conditions which are still a mystery, they start to pop up through the ground — usually after a good rainfall.
The morel mushroom is easily distinguished from nearly all other mushrooms by its irregular honeycombed appearance and excellent flavor. Morels are found during the spring months in old orchards and especially in areas that have been burned out, under poplar trees, and under areas of heavy growth,
