Roundtable plans meeting
The next meeting of the Blue Ridge Civil War Roundtable will be a dinner meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at the Public House restalurant in Flint Hill, VA.
Lesley Wood will talk on “Women Physicians in the Civil War and Civil War Medicine.” Wood is a living historian and Civil War medical reenactor. During her talk, she will portray Dr. Sarah Ann Chadwick Clapp, who served as a contract regimental surgeon, surgeon in general hospitals in Cairo, III., and aboard hospital transport.ships. Wood will discuss Clapp’s role and that of other heroic women physicians during the Civil War.
Currently an adjunct professor at Delaware Technical and Community College, Wood holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Temple University and completed graduate studies at West Chester University. She has been conducting research on 19th-century women physicians since 1999.
The Public House restaurant is at 675 Zachary Taylor Hwy (R.522), in Pint Hill, VA. Everyone, members and non-members are invited and welcome. Dinner will be $12 per person.
The evening starts with a social time at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. followed by the program. Guests can come just for the program at 8:00 p.m. if they wish. For reservations and directions call Gary Wilson at 540-547-4106 by Monday, May 16.
Dressage schooling available
The Old Dominion Hounds Pony Club is organizing a series of Friday evening dressage schooling shows this summer at Windsor Lodge Farm, Flint Hill. The dates are May 20, June 17, July 15, and August 12. The shows will run from 4 p.m. to dusk, with food available on the show grounds. Series championship to be awarded.
