The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community (RAAC) presents the film, “The Story of the Weeping Camel," on May 6 at 8 p.m. at The Theatre in Little Washington, on Gay Street. Cost for adults $6, students $4 and children $3.

Bake sale

Cub Scout Pack 123 of Washington is having a bake sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. It will be held at the Rappahannock Co-op. For more information, call Dan Bailey at 987-8522.

Breakfast benefit

A breakfast to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Hint Hill Fire Hall. Settle’s Grocery Team, will be preparing the breakfast. The cost will be $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Come and enjoy the country breakfast and to help this team raise money to fight cancer.

Remembering MaryBeth

The MaryBeth Williams Memorial Fund will have its annual dinner and bluegrass music gala on Saturday, May 7 at 4:30 p.m. at the home of Richard and Jeannie McNear, in Gid Brown Hollow. Tickets for the fundraiser may be purchased at the Rappahannock Extension Office 675-3619 and are $50 per couple or $25 per person. Children under 12 will be admitted free of charge.

Pickm* at Hackley’s Store

Pickin’ at Hackley’s Store in Amissville is going to be on Saturday, May 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Weather.permitting). The 50/50 Raffle is going to benefit the Rappahannock Relay for Life.

Community Drum Circle

All are invited to join in creating rhythm and music on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Belle Meade Schoolhouse, located on Route 231, south of Sperryville. All ages welcome, no experience necessary. There are plenty of drums and instruments to share, or bring your own. Suggested donation: $5-10. For more information call, (540) 987-8417.

GED Test

The GED test is coming to Rappahannock County on May 10, 17 and 24. This is the real GED test and not a practice test. The GED testing center at GWC-Piedmont Technical Center is taking the test on the road in order to meet the needs of the rural communities they serve. Additionally, the Chief Examiner has split the test up in order to make it easier to focus on two subjects at a time.

The GED test battery is five subjects: Language Arts, Writing: Language Arts, Reading; Social Studies; Science; and Mathematics. The cost of the GED test is $35 and must be paid by money order made out to Orange County School Board. You must pre-register in order to take the test and can do this at the Rappahannock County School Board office on Rt. 211. Anyone in need of a GED and over the age of 18 can take the test. If you have any questions, call the Regional Adult Education office at 825-0476.

Fauquier County Civil War

Roundtable plans meeting

The Fauquier County Civil War Roundtable’s monthly dinner meeting will be held Wednesday, May 11, 2005,at the Fauquier Springs Country Club. Everyone, members and non-members are invited and welcome.

Mike Schellhammer will speak on: “Soldiering Is Not Play: The Challenges of Leadership in Volunteer Regiments.” Mike will analyze the difficulties that volunteer officers and non-commissioned officers faced in training, tactics, employing tactics, motivating the troops, and making decisions on the battlefield.

Mr. Schellhammer is an intelligence specialist with DOD with 20 years of service in the regular Army and Army Reserve as an officer of infantry, military intelligence, and civil affairs.

The evening starts with a social time at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. followed by the program. Guests can come just for the program if they wish. For reservations and directions call President Jim Flanagan at 540-439-3549 by Monday, May 9.
