As he grew older, he had his own stories to tell, including the one about his near brush with death as a soldier during World War II, and the story of how he had the honor of escorting First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt when she came to visit Hampton Institute where Mr. Russell was a student. He remembers very clearly the words of encouragement to continue his education offered by the First Lady and considers it a highlight of his life. In a tape recorded interview with James Gannon which was included in “Beyond the Rim”, Mr. Russell said he remembers Mrs. Roosevelt saying to him, “You are doing very well aren’t you?”
