Stephens graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a double major in fine arts and international relations. He received his Master of Fine Arts from James Madison University where he continues to teach art, drawing and design. Stephens is also an active member of Middle Street Gallery, a cooperative gallery in Washington, Virginia.
