With the start of school just a few weeks away, superintendent of schools, Dr. Robert Chappell, is already facing huge math challenges.
With time running out on revised bids by the Lantz Construction Company of Winchester, Va. for a new auxiliary gym, band room and track, an unhappy Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors peppered Chappell with sharp questions Monday afternoon.
Due to ballooning cost estimates, more than half a million dollars in excess of the amount originally borrowed and budgeted, Chappell was in the difficult position of having to stand before the board and present alternative construction proposals for their consideration.
After hearing Chappell’s presentation, Wakefield District Board member Roger Welch expressed displeasure about the single bidder on both current and planned school construction projects. Welch suggested it put them at the mercy of the contractor. Opining that another, specialized contractor might be less expensive than the Lantz Construction Company of Winchester, Virginia, Welch mentioned the General Steel company and offered. “I feel we could do this for half, the price.”
