Generally, the packs of riders are fairly well-behaved before they get to Sperryville, according to Settle. But as they get closer to the mountain pass known as Thornton Gap, the group mentality can start to shift, he explained.
“Based on the complaints that we get, the wrecks that we work and our other experiences in patrol, we’ve found that the mindset starts to change back through there,” , Settle said, after passing a small cluster of shops. “By the time they hit this straightaway, some of them are doing 100 miles per hour.”
Many of these instances are videotaped as riders literally try to see who can get to the top of the mountain first, Settle said. A lot of bikes get wrecked in the process. Some riders get badly hurt and others don’t five to tell about it.
