What happened?
Two lives were lost in motorcycle accidents in Fauquier County this weekend — one on Interstate 66 and one on John Marshall Highway. (See story, Page Al.)
Last weekend, state troopers responded to five motorcycle wrecks. Of those, one occurred here and four were reported on the winding country roads of nearby Rappahannock County.
The Rappahannock wrecks resulted in several injuries and one fatality. Authorities believe that three of the wrecks occurred when operators lost control of their vehicles. Three of the accidents reportedly involved groups of riders.
The number of recent wrecks is cause for concern, but not necessarily cause for alarm, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Franz Mahler.
“It is unusual. Maybe it was a coincidence ... I don’t know,” said Mahler, who works out of the Area 12 Office in Warrenton. “You have to consider the number of people who are out riding.”
Statistics provided by the Fauquier County Sheriffs Office show that deputies have worked 15 wrecks involving motorcycles here this year. The state police have worked 12, according to their records. Contributing factors
