control the whole time at the district tournament, he tied for second in our district,” recalled Dodson’s coach Jason Gochenour.
Dodson has gone to the regional tournament every year for his entire high school career, and has been able to dominate golf at RCHS because of his frequent practice sessions.
“He’s played for a while, and he’s played a lot. It takes some work to get good,” said Gochenour. Much of the work Dodson has done has been beside his Uncle Ronald, who began teaching Jacob golf when he was thirteen.
“He taught me the game, and he comes to every golf match,” said Dodson. “He's like a personal golf coach.”
The most important aspect of a golfer’s game is his swing, and Dodson’s is distinctive.
“He hits the ball straight enough. Jacob hits a four iron as long as other people hit drivers,” said Gochenour. Aside from the power aspect of his swing, Dodson’s technique stands out because his left sleeve can usually be seen flapping in the wind of his backswing.
