Some arborists claim that young tree maintenance is not necessary because the trees are healthy and growing well. Actually, young trees generally require greater attention because they are grow ing and changing so rapidly
Proper pruning early in a tree's life prevent and correct problems that cause trees to fail as they mature. The primary goal is to ensure a strong structure for future growth Pruning lightly but often is best. Every two to three years is optimal lor young trees due to their rapid grow th rate.
Root collar disorders are a leading cause of poor growth, decline and death in young trees. Young trees should exhibit a slight flare where the stem joins the root sy stem just above the soil line.
Fertilization also promotes the grow th of young trees. Treatments should be based on soil and/or foliar analy sis.
Irrigation is critical to maintaining growth. Trees generally demand 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week during the growing season to maintain growth when rainfall docs not occur. This is equivalent to 7(X) to 1000 gallons of water per thousand square feet of KHit zone. Insects and disease organisms weaken trees by defoliation as well as stem and rcKil damage.
