his first calendar in 1996. There was a second in 1997. He started printing Tshirts with his work, and many in the county went about with an image of Old Rag emblazoned on their chests. Someone suggested that he put his name on a T-shirt. Pellegatta countered, “what are you crazy, who would buy that? My friend pointed out that people wear Ralph, Lauren’s name on their shirts. So I made a batch, as a joke, figuring maybe I’d wear one.”
But the unadorned “Pellegatta” name instantly became one of his biggest sellers, along with “Slackahannock” and “Rehabahannock.” Dozens of area youth and adults displayed his eponymous couture, making those not in the know wonder just who this famous Pellegatta was.
Fighting back
