Since the living and dining rooms, as well as the kitchen, flow together as one room, the slate hearth and kitchen counters, the brushed stainless steel shelves, the cherry cabinets and white oak floors contribute to the disciplined contemporary look. A large kitchen island with dark granite countertop is surrounded by four black and chrome stools. Contemporary oil paintings, many by Jane Batchelder and her daughter Susan Wise, catch the eye of visitors, and fill the generous space.
The hallways on both sides of the living room are hung with large black and white family pictures. On either side of the entryway are matching offices, filled with books, and teak desks, and other necessities of modem life. A guest room is on the left, at the end of the corridor. This room has a large fireplace, set at an angle in the comer of the room, with a teak sofa facing it. Other furnishings include another Nelson bench, an old pine chest from Jane’s family, and a 1950s teak and wicker sewing table. This room has its own private patio.
