What makes a photograph great?
What makes it art rather than simple imaging? A great photograph is one that evokes an emotional reaction, that makes one stop and want to continue looking, gleaning pleasure through many long seconds of gazing. The image may later pop into your head, to be enjoyed again in memory, just as lines from a good song or poem, a good novel or a good movie will become a part of you, popping into your head and influencing your thoughts and emotions long after they are no longer physically present before you.
The photography of multi-decade Rappahannock icon Ted Pellegatta, Jr. is of that sort.
Pellegatta is having a one-man show of his landscapes at The Packing Shed Gallery in Washington starting today, October 6, and running through October 27th. Pellegatta will be at the gallery from 4 to 7 p.m. this Sunday, October 9, for an artists’s reception.
A familiar face to many in Rappahannock, Pellegatta has himself become a fixture of the local landscape he photographs.
In its early years, Pellegatta could often be found holding court on the front porch of Mountainside Market on pleasant afternoons.
