Johns is proud of the nonprofit status of the magazine and says that it has made reporting on Hurricane Katrina much more straightforward. “We don’t have to answer to stockholders. We can work with all the newspapers and metropolitan organizations to put together the definitive document on the how and why of the hurricane. All the profits from that endeavor are going directly to hurricane relief,” noted Johns.
But Johns’ “National Geographic” does not offer up only catastrophic facts.
Johns remarked. “We celebrate the beauty of the world as well, and we often give examples of people who have made a profound difference to us, people who have made the world a better place to live.”
Johns will talk about some of these “ordinary people who have done extraordinary things” when he comes to'the library October 14th at 8 p.m.
