A modern design
A curving pebble driveway leads to the porticoed entry between the .house itself and the carriage house. Huge stone boulders from nearby Massie’s Mountain dot the curved gardens, where ornamental grasses, lavenders, sage, thyme and other woodland plants welcome the visitor.
Entering at the front door, one’s eye immediately is drawn to the view out the back of the house, where a triple bank of three large windows opens onto the fields and then mountains north of town. The landscape itself seems a part of the house, and the mood changes with the weather. A large slate patio with simple wrought iron railings and dramatic plantings is always an invitation to the outdoors.
The entryway is simply and dramatically furnished with a Nelson bench, black chest, and, on the ceramic tile floor, a rug designed specifically for the area. Unique and intriguing vases and bowls complete the space.
High ceilings and skylights provide the living area with space and light. Angled closets open the view. The great room, with its charcoal gray stone fireplace and chimney, is furnished with classic modem furniture, some of it purchased in the 1950s by the Batchelder’s and some collected in the years since.
