“About ten years it moved to the Packing Shed. A few people helped us move videos,” remembered Plotnick.
Cinema Paradiso’s beginnings as Kramer’s film collection mean that the majority of the store’s stock is on videotape, but there is a growing stock of DVDs for rent. The format change is complicated because the film industry is itself still in the midst of a similar changeover. Newer movies are now only released on DVD, while many of the obscure movies that are Cinema Paradiso’s specialty remain available only on videotape. Still, Kramer continues to add to her stock.
“Every week I buy five to ten movies,” said Kramer.
Their town
The close relationship between Cinema Paradiso and its customers is the core of the store’s success. Many customers value the store as much for the knowledgeable staff as the films.“They begin to trust us,” explained Kramer.
“When people rent here, they know they can come back and talk about the film with us, and maybe get another recommendation,” explained Plotnick. Customers at the store often sit down to discuss the movies they have seen and the movies they want to see with the staff. Plotnick is never afraid to give a customer her opinion.
“It’s good to see awful films, because then you can decide what you like and what you don’t like,” said Plotnick.
