Democrat Tim Kaine was triumphant over Republican Jerry Kilgore in the Virginia governor’s race, propelled by big victories in Fairfax County and the rest of Northern Virginia.
With 95 percent of the statewide vote counted, Kaine had 52 percent compared to 46 percent for Kilgore, according to unofficial results from the State Board of Elections. This ratio is almost exactly the same as the breakdown within Rappahannock County, which surprisingly went completely Democrat in this election. For the last ten years Rappahannock has gone exclusively to Republican candidates, with the only exception being the 2002 US House of Representatives race of Democrat Ben “Cooter” Jones .
