“He did things that were completely inappropriate that we didn’t know about at the time,” said one victim’s father. “He would call my daughter on her cell phone after we thought she had gone to bed and talk to her late at night. He persuaded her to break up with her boyfriend.” Ingratiationg themselves with the family and becoming friends with a potential victim is a common tactic of child predators, often referred to as “grooming.”
“Most child sex offenses are committed by people who know the child,” explained Luke. Even after they had told their families about Edwards’ abuses, his victims still thought of him as a good guy.
“Psychologically she was confused about what to do,” said one father. “Even when she told me what was going on, she said ‘Please don’t do anything to Coach E.”
Coming forward
At Edwards’ sentencing, the victims and their families and friends sat in one long row on a single bench, holding hands in support of each other.
