Scrabble School
Dorothy Warner of the Scrabble School Preservation Foundation has proposed that the county use the pre-integration black elementary school to replace the county senior citizens’ center when their current lease expires. As a former public school, the building and land are county property. Foundation spokesman Bob Lander and consultant Amy Silver presented the BOS with a detailed proposal to restore the building and use it both for a senior center and a museum and educational resource.
Silver presented a summary estimating a cost of $350,000 for restoration, of which $178,000 is already pledged from private sources. McCarthy urged support for the project, commenting that the county would be spending some money in any event to maintain the property and that over time some of the expense would be made up through saved rent and through possibly using the building as a polling place.
