Book Signing: Wandering Through Virginia’s Vineyards
Author Walker Elliot Rowe will be on hand to discuss and sign copies of his new book, Wandering Through Virginia’s Vineyards, on Friday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Sperryville Bookshop. The book includes interviews with those wineries Rowe deemed the best, most interesting, or most important for the industry as well as chronicling his experiences working alongside migrant workers to understand the craft of the winemaker and grape grower. On Friday, November 11 at 8 p.m. the Rappahannock Association for Arts and the Community (RAAC) Library Series is pleased to welcome back Merry Foresta and Andy Grundberg, who share not only a life together, a farm near Old Rag, and a home in Washington D.C., but also share parallel careers as curators and writers on photography. The couple recently volunteered their time to serve as jurors for the group art show which will be the centerpiece of RAAC’s Artists of Rappahannock festival held on November 5 and 6. At the library on Nov. 11, Foresta and Grundberg will draw on their backgrounds in American and contemporary art to present “The Salon, the Gallery and the Firehouse,” perspectives on art shows, jurying, and artists in Rappahannock in particular.
Foresta, Director of the Smithsonian Photography Initiative, organized the landscape exhibition “Between Home and Heaven” for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as more recent exhibitions on the history of American photography. Grundberg, a former critic for the New York Times, is author of Crisis of the Real: Writings on Photography since 1974 and the curator of the traveling exhibition “In Response to Place: Photographs from The Nature Conservancy’s Last Great Places.” He is also Chair of the Photography Department at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
Foresta and Grundberg spoke to an overflow crowd at RAAC Library series in 2002, using the photographs of artists from Ansel Adams to William Wegman to explore the relationship between art and nature in recent landscape photographs.
