School Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell briefed to the School Board on the Board of Supervisors’ efforts to rebid for a scaled back track at Rappahannock County High School. Chappell reported that the “price came in not any better, even with adjustments... it is only down to $582000. There is no way the BOS is going to pay $600,000 for track and field upgrades”.
Chappell recommended that this had tc be accepted and the school system must go on, and “hack out a plan to get this project done. Perhaps try to do it in phases, rather than (using the architectural firm) OWPR and their formal bid process, try some other process to get there”.
Last year, the School Board took a bid for a number of construction projects, including a track with a vinyl surface. Lantz Construction Company of Winchester, Virginia bid $550,000 for the full, acrylic covered track. Because the bid for the package ef several projects came in higher than originally estimated, the track was separated from the rest of the package of proposed school improvements.
