THE DEATH OF A
SPOUSE The death of a spouse is one of life’s most powerful events. For some surviving spouses, time does little to lessen feelings of disbelief, bitterness and loneliness. In recent years, mental health experts have made strides in identifying and treating those who have severe difficulties after the death of a spouse. With one new strategy, called “traumatic grief treatment”, a therapist helps the bereaved spouse identify thoughts or situations that trigger intense emotions, such as recollections of the death itself or shared activities, and then develop practical ways to cope with them. According to one study, this therapy significantly reduced acute grief symptoms, as well as anxiety and depression, among patients who completed four months of weekly treatment.
