in the near future, and at least 12 needed repairs as soon as possible. The Board then said, in effect, take the road money and fix such roads and bridges as in his judgment most needed it. A May 1942 letter from the Highway Department confirmed the situation. In turning down a citizen’s request for a road improvement, it stated that 50% of the county’s bridges were in bad shape. And in June 1942 came news of a fund reduction, that only 25% of projects could be done; that steel and iron were war restricted materials; and that the U.S. War Production Board was allocating steel plate for bridges on a month-to-month basis. At this point, Tapp’s Ford Bridge disappeared into Umbo.
