16,1942, a northeast storm that is still remembered by many people in Rappahannock County, seems to have provided the needed bridge at Tapp’s Ford. It was the same storm that had washed the 1882 span into the Hawksbill Creek along Route 654 in Page County. Maybe old timers in Rappahannock County can remember when the bridge finally arrived here and help solve this mystery. One thing is certain, the rain damage caused by the 1942 storm saw the Department of Highways and the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors devote all road funds, without exception, to bridge repair and replacement work well into 1945.
However it got here, the old bridge held its head high for another half-century at least. A delicate, lacy bridge, it had seen it all since its start in 1882.
