I want to believe that your speech last week was the considered, rational analysis of a friend to our servicemen (I am retired, but two of my brothers are still active in combat arms), which sought the right thing to do for our country and our armed forces. I regret that many Republicans have chosen to respond with personal, ad hominem attacks, instead of examining your statements on their merits. I, and you, I am sure, also know that their rebuttals are motivated by the systematic ad hominem attacks by the Democratic Party and the media on our President, which your remarks fueled.

I know that when Teddy Kennedy accuses President Bush of lying, he is himself lying for political advantage, or else simple to a degree not credible.
