It is here that the trail runs cold. The only clue is from a VDOT publication of December 1975 entitled, “A Survey and Photographic Inventory of Metal Truss Bridges in Virginia, 1865-1932, Part III, The Culpeper Construction District.” In discussing the 1882 bridge at Madison Mills, the document notes that, “rather than abandon the three older spans, each was used as an individual bridge at a separate location.* Regrettably, the one remaining truss [Tapp’s Ford Bridge] was denuded of its once elegant and decorative ironwork when it was moved to its present location on Route 645 crossing the Rappahannock River between
