Because of our human natures, and because art is created in the context of things we all experience, all art can be described as derivative. Having said that, however, I have to say that Donna LaPre’s works on paper, mixings of collage, drawing and painting, are very highly original. They are also courageous in the refined risks that they take through their juxtaposition of startling images; to merely describe them, as LaPre does, as “suggestions of a dreamworld or liminal state of consciousness” does not begin to do them justice
