In 1890 Edward T. Keyser deeded one-fourth acre of land northwest of Smedley in the Gid Brown Hollow for the purpose of constructing a church of the Brethren. This was done, and the church was used for a number of years. However, the group became too small to maintain the building, and its use was discontinued.
In 1947, the trustees gave up the use of the property.
The previous year, these same trustees had purchased from Ada Mac Smoot and Loring Anderson the tract of land and buildings which had been used as the Smedley Colored School.
The Rev. Edward Hawkins of the Bible Baptist Church of Culpeper conducted services until the early 1960s, at which time the church was closed.
In 1972 it was reorganized with John Burke as pastor, and the name changed to the Gid Brown Bible Baptist Church. Pastor Burke continued to be pastor of the church. It has a current membership of 102.
