When we tell people that our address is Woodville, we are often asked, where’s that?
With by no means negative intent, some of our standard answers include “it’s about one mile from the end of the earth,” ‘just a one-horse town” or “don’t blink as you pass through or you will miss it.” None of these descriptions is entirely accurate, although each reflects characteristics that most town ‘residents’ (we live 5 miles out-of-town) value -very highly. For while the proverbial blink might miss today’s Woodville, most of us would agree that it makes up its lack of size many times over in the shear beauty of its location.
But the towrt once also had some “brawn’ to go along with its beauty. The present town is in fact, but a shadow of its historical self. Woodville came into being in 1798 after over 30 area residents petitioned the Virginia Legislature. Such a petition appears to have been common practice in Virginia in those days. Many towns were established by law rather than coming into existence as a result of development at a particular location. Woodville was the fourth town established in what was then Culpeper County (Rappahannock Co. was split off in 1833). Thirty half-acre lots were laid out on streets named for trees: Chestnut, Poplar, White Oak,
