Formed out of necessity in 1831, Page County had a great need to operate within its own boundaries of the Massanutten and Blue Ridge Mountain. In 1878, Luray Caverns was discovered. This discovery, along with the formation of the Shenandoah Valley Railroad in 1881, brought an influx of tourists, industry, and varied commerce.
During the reconstruction years after the Civil War, Page County’s growth happened much too quickly, leading to a severe recession in the 1890’s. The culmination of these events initiated a quaint photographic history that is contained within the pages of “Geology Along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park” by Robert Badger ($14.95) which tied for 10th place.
