Apple, Willow, Walnut, Maple, Locust, and Cherry, the latter being the main street (or Sperryville Pike) which today is US 522. At least 26 additional lots were added by 1801.
While there is some dispute over the origin of the town’s name, the most likely story seems to be that it was taken from the woods that surrounded the site, hence the choice of street names. An alternate explanation for the name suggests that it honored a Rev. John Woodville, a late 17th century circuit preacher, however this is probably not true. ; By 1835, Woodville had a population of about 200 and
