County residents had to stand in the back and on the stairs once the courthouse seats were full at Monday’s Rappahannock Board of Supervisors public hearing on the 2007 draft county budget. Rappahannock residents turned out en masse to discuss the $19 million 2007 budget, and more specifically, the tax increases that go along with it. 2007’s real estate tax rate is projected to be $.12 higher than the $.50 per $100 dollars that would have kept taxes the same as last year, a hike expected to generate a 20 percent increase in county property tax revenue.
The large turnout of citizens at the meeting asked their supervisors to do something about it.
“I think people tire going to be shocked when they get their tax bill,” said Jim Gannon, a resident of Hampton District.
