In fact, she can attribute her interest in welding to her interest and love of horses. Through her horses, she was exposed to a different type of welder, namely blacksmiths. These blacksmiths sparked some of her first appeal to welding.

Local artist Mike Doyle is one of the welders whose beautiful work also got Katie fascinated with the art form. Katie said that welding intrigued her because it’s not something you see most people doing. Mr. Norman, she said, is an “awesome teacher” and she encourages anyone interested to take the class which is offered as an elective to students in ninth grade and up. It’s also possible through the school’s welding classes for students to become certified welders.

At first Katie was a little intimidated by the class. Not only was she the only girl in the class for both semesters she took it, but the machinery was daunting. She was delighted with its capacity to make wonderful art but well aware of its danger.
