Many speakers complained that their children could no longer afford to live in the county they grew up in.
“Rappahannock County is a great place for a deer or a bunny rabbit, but if you’re a young family trying to build a house, it’s out of the question!” John Ferdetta of Viewtown told the Board.
“It is putting the cart before the horse to ask taxpayers to iund a development rights purchase program for a few big farms before it funds a program .. .to house the Rappahannock County workforce,” voiced Pat Saltonstall of Flint Hill.
Alvin Henry, of the Rappahannock County Planning Commission, serves on the county’s current mechanism for purchasing development rights, The Farmland Preservation Program. While Henry supports the idea of supporting farming by purchasing development rights, he spoke against the proposed Conservation Easement district.
