Master Gardener
Master Gardener volunteers are trained and supervised through Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) of Virginia Tech. A master gardener is a volunteer educator within his or her community who receives specialized training in environmental horticulture through VCE. All individuals receiving master gardener training receive a minimum of 50 hours of classroom instruction. There is an additional 50 hours (minimum) required in a hands-on internship spent on field experience in horticulture-based, education programs. A minimum of eight hours of recertification training is required annually along with 20 hours of work time in educational programming and/or volunteer coordination activities. The master gardener program is open to the public.
