“I urge you to vote down the $.02 tax rate increase for the Conservation Easement District,” Wakefield District resident Jean Lollard told The proposed Conservation Easement ,, District would add $.02 per $100 to the real estate tax rate on all the land in the county. The $300,000 generated by the rate hike would be used to purchase the development rights to large tracts of farm land in Rappahannock to preserve farmable land and forestall development.
After Lillard asked the board to vote against the district, county resident Margaret Ralph asked everyone in the room opposed to to the proposed district to stand up, and virtually everyone present did so, over the objections of BOS Chairman Bob Anderson, who informed the crowd that the board “didn’t need any demonstrations.”
