it you were a DumDieoee Hying by and you happened upon this large, heavily scented poof of a flower, you’d investigate for sure. But you’d regret it immediately. Lady’s slipper orchids are deceptive pollinators. They cheat.
There’s no nectar reward inside. Bumblebees are lured into the pouch where they become trapped with no way out except to crawl past a pollencovered staminode through tiny exit holes at the base. If they happen to carry pollen from a previous encounter with another orchid, they deposit this on the stigma as they leave. The flower gets pollinated and the bee gets frustrated.
Cheating is common in the orchid world with nearly a third of all orchids (8000 species) practicing some form of pollinator deception. The most bizarre are orchids that look and smell so nearly like female bees that male bees are deceived into visiting the flower to mate. No reward this time either.
