outueuiiies styie is determined by the home itself—the architecture, the period of history during which it was built, or the period of history the architecture of the home is emulating. Some people are especially dutiful to the historic preservation of their homes, adhering to the rules that reflect the proper style. It may well be the reason that the choice was made to purchase the home. A love of history can dictate a style. A word of caution is to remember you live in a home, not a museum. And many times an unexpected, surprise feature can be used to establish personality in a room, and add just the right element of uniqueness to your home. As long as the room comes together in a cohesive way, i.e., the finish, scale, texture, or color is repeated in the rest of the room, a unique piece or accessory can be refreshing.
Designers are often asked what style they prefer, or how can a designer be “good at” lots of styles. I answer by stating that good design can be expressed in as many ways as there are people with homes to decorate. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than helping a client put together their look. The elements of design remain the same—color scale, line, texture, rhythm, etc. How these elements are expressed is creative and different every time.
