have gotten stellar grades at RCHS. They also all knew at least some English before they came, although some had it easier than others.
“When I first got here, I would just nod whenever someone: talked to me, but I never understood them," admitted Cabral. RCHS sports were a big change for the students as well, because in the European style school systems they attend at home contests are intramural rather than competitive between schools. Being a foreign exchange student is about adjusting to differences.
“Some of them can have trouble making the adjustment,” admits Lucking.
Kids that travel here with Aspect, Lucking’s organization, are asked to limit contact with their families at home by phone or email, although this is a rule that most of the RCHS students admit to breaking.
“If I need to call my mother, I am going to call my mother,” explained Julia Hutfils.
The students arrived in Rappahannock shortly before the start of school and moved in with local host families. The families work with Lucking to match students with compatible families. Hutfils, for example shares an interest in horses with her host family, who own several. This can be a difficult time for the new students.
