WHEN DEATH
OCCURS In the first moments after the death of a loved one, communicate the news to friends and family members to whatever extent you are able. Your next contact should be with the funeral director, who can help obtain a death certificate, transport the body arrange for the funeral, and write the obituary, among other matters. Then if the deceased was employed, ask his or her employer if any benefits are due the deceased. Inquiries should also be made of Social Security for death benefits. If there is a life insurance policy, the beneficiary (or beneficiary’s guardian) should complete the necessary paperwork needed for the death benefit. All other important paperwork should also be reviewed in a timely manner. Funeral directors know what to do when someone dies.
