After taking this year’s budget debate down to the wire, Virginia lawmakers gave the final approvals to the state budget last week.
Gov. Tim Kaine (D) signed the spending bill Friday, just before it went into effect at midnight July 1.
The budget includes a 4percent raise for all state employees, as well as statefunded local government positions and teachers.
Lawmakers touted the increases in spending on public education, which total $1.5 billion in sum, according to Kaine’s office.
Although the General Assembly put off the debate about a long-term solution to transportation funding, the budget did include enough onetime transportation dollars to improve the outlook for state construction projects a bit.
