The Fauquier County Civil War Roundtable’s monthly dinner meeting will be held Wednesday, July 12, at the Fauquier Springs Country Club. Everyone, members and non-members are invited and welcome.
Ms Debra Sandoe McCauslin will talk on “Kitty Payne’s Pain.”
Ms McCauslin will be talking about Kitty Payne and her four children who were once slaves in Rappahannock County, Virginia owned by Samuel and Mary Maddox. After Samuel’s death, Mary freed the slaves and moved to and lived with them in Adams County, PA. Later, Mary returned to Virginia, remarried and sold her farm to her nephew, Samuel Maddox, Jr. During the night of July 24, 1845, Kitty Payne and three of her children were kidnapped by Samuel Maddox, Jr. and returned to Virginia. Though there was an uproar in Pennsylvania, and one of the assailants captured, Kitty was never to regain her freedom.
Debra McCauslin has been employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for over 15 years. She was bom in Gettysburg and is a life-long resident of Adams County, PA. She has developed and taught the course, “The Rebs Have Arrived” and spoken to CW roundtables throughout central Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Debra serves on the Board of Historic Preservation for Gettysburg/Adams County.
The evening starts with a social time at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. followed by the program. Guests can come just for the program if they wish. For reservations and directions call President Jim Flanagan at 540-439-3549 by Monday, July 10.
