In a county already replete with a plethora of wineries strewn across this fertile, winerich land, the last thing Rappahannock needs is one more winery. But not if they are like this one.
When you reach the top of the Jungs long and winding gravel driveway, you will see why this winery is unique. The Jungs house sits perched on a precipice 1,350 feet high, overlooking the Blue Ridge mountain range where the fog lazily saunters about in the early morning air and billows out in vertical streams from beneath the endless oasis of evergreen trees, out like little smoke signals that say follow me. All this and you haven’t even sipped a drop of wine, yet you are already maudlin from the view.
Chester Gap Cellars is the creation of Bemd, 44, and Kristi, 42, Jung, who have lived in Rappahannock County with their two children for six and a half years now. “We really fell in love with Rappahannock County,” said Kristi, “It’s kind of nice here,” she said with a bonny smile.
Before moving to Rappahannock, the Jungs lived in Florida where they first started to dabble in the intricacy of the wine world. They grew grapes and had two wineries in Florida but decided to sell them off and move to a more wine conducive area with more space for grape growing. “I took a trip up here one time camping and absolutely fell in love,” said Bemd, “And when we got back we said, lets take another trip back!” But what really sent their fervor for Rappahannock
