A house burning takes a great deal of preparation to ensure safety for the firefighters. Carter and Amissville Fire Capt. Wayne Dodson worked for several days to account for eveiy detail, including disconnecting utilities and verifying that there is no insurance policy for the house.
Quite a bit of strategy is involved in burning the house as well. Firefighters cannot simply pour gas on a house and fight a match. National Fire Protection Act standards forbid them from using any flammable liquids, carpets or house furniture during five-fire training.
The standards were enacted in 2002 to safeguard firefighters during training. Carter said some 30 firefighters across the nation have died during five-fire drills in the past 10 years.
The firefighters began Saturday by setting several small, controlled blazes with dry hay, wood palettes and flares on the top floor of the house. The initial fires burned off some fuel and prepared the structure to collapse on itself once the whole house was set aflame around noon.
