als. Catarina Oliveira spent long hours sewing for shepherds and angels while Vanessa Spence, her daughter and mother of two of the dozen angels, wrangled them into heaven. But there was also constant costume innovation on the part of the young cast. Every time I saw them, they had changed their costumes to be a more accurate reflection of their character. Using their own clothing as a base they added strange touches like “caution” tape to define the fearsome Herdman ruffians. The script called for actors playing firemen to arrive and search for a fire. Instead, a call to Mary Collins resulted in four bono fide firefighters: Danny Huff, Mark Deal, Charles Crawford and Brandi Stitely, from Washington Volunteer Fire Department appearing in gear, with hoses, and a fire truck parked outside the theatre, to assure the audience that they need not be alarmed. I cannot say warmly enough how grateful I am to everyone who played a part in this community event. This simple attempt to encourage the art of acting and the craft theatre in the young, blossomed into a major outpouring of community involvement. And I promise that this is only the beginning of exciting projects for young actors in the region.
