ment store. The Sheriff’s officials followed the children inside, meeting K-mart employees who welcomed the children into the store with cookies and hot drinks.
Each year the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office organizes a program that helps county children who are less fortunate during the holidays. Each child receives a $100 dollar gift card that allows them to purchase gifts for themselves or for their families.
Rappahannock deputies and county volunteers led kids throughout the store pushing shopping carts, helping them choose gifts and selecting the right size of clothing for them.
Following the shopping excursion the children went to the Washington Fire Hall for breakfast where Santa Claus came to visit and gave each child Christmas stockings filled with presents. Volunteers met at the Washington Baptist Church to assemble donated food baskets for local families.
Captain Brown, the Public School resource officer, has organized the program each year. “It was one of the best behaved group of kids that we have ever had,” said Brown adding, “I think that all of the volunteers enjoyed themselves, I know the kids did.”
