year. Aiinougn some of last year s “stars” have graduated and gone on to college, new stars appear on the horizon year after year.
Under the gifted baton of Band Director Matt Yonkey, the RCHS Band began its concert with a rousing rendition of “Zacatecas.” This lively Mexican march shared the billing with other equally welcome new numbers for the band, including “Regenisis” (directed by guest conductor Ben Beasley of the Rappahannock County Elementary School Band). Also much appreciated was Christmas Variants,” a medley of music based on the old Christmas hymn, “Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel.”
In the second part of the program, the band’s “Jazz Ensemble really lit up the house with a selection of especially spirited band numbers. One of the band’s new stars, Ryan Benyo on the keyboard, soloed with an incredibly rhythmic jazz arrangement entitled “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” The program ended with everyone’s favorite, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
