Brown also noted that the Shop With a Deputy program extends far beyond the sheriff's office. Volunteers included members of the Fire Departments, the Rescue Squad, school teachers, bus drivers, and members of the community. “We had over 50 volunteers that helped us with everything, including food shopping and distribution,” Brown said. Two ATF agents from Maryland were also part of the team.
The K-Mart in Front Royal gave the children discounts, and the department store employees also chipped in to help buy gifts. Martin’s grocery in Front Royal gave discounts on the food that was purchased for the program.
This year the Shop with a Deputy program marked its eleventh year and helped about 78 kids and their families.
Brown says that he is amazed every year by the outpouring of generosity for the program. “It really comes from a smaller community and caring about your people,” he said proudly. “It’s an honor for me to organize it.”
