Advent Spiral
On December 15, Hearthstone School held its annual Christmas celebration and Advent Spiral. Students, teachers, family and friends met in the community room, where a spiral of evergreens and round logs had been placed with a candle in the center. After an invocation by Hearthstone Director Jane Mullan, all lit candles from the center pillar candle in the spiral and placed them on one of the logs. The spiral commemorates the darkest day of the year, and the light that is returning now as well as the light within ourselves. It is a beautiful and touching way to celebrate this time of year, and a physical way for the children to understand the light of Christmas, the light of the Winter Solstice, and the beauty and light that exist in each person.
After the Advent Spiral, members of the Hearthstone School Band performed several songs. The highlight was the third grade, which performed for an audience for the first time, having just started music classes with music teacher Dontez Harris this year. Third graders performed Jingle Bells, Rolling Along and the Hearthstone School Song.
