priest in charge of St. John’s, Broadcreek, Conveener of the Region 6 Clericus, and member of the Peace Commission. From 1996 to 2005, he served on various diocesan committees and as a supply priest.
In 1970, he, along with ten other pilots, started the Flying Circus in Bealeton, Va., to put oh air shows recreating the days of the barnstormers in their fragile bi-planes. From May to October each year he would leave the church after the last service on Sunday, drive to Bealeton where he kept hi? 1928 Tiger Moth, and perform in the show, giving rides in the two seat bi-plane before and after. He served on the board and as president for many years before reluctantly giving up flying in 1988.
In 1986 he started St. Alban’s Housing Corporation to fill a void in low-income retirement housing in Arlington! With the assistance of the Diocese of Virginia .and HUD and the support of Congressman Frank Wolfe of Arlington, he was able to build Elmwood House and then Lockwood House providing 72 apartments for low-income retirees.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah, of Goodwin House, Alexandria; his brother Lockwood and his wife Gale of Charlottesville; his daughters Sarah Williams of Corvallis. Oregon and Hazel Cross of Arnold, Maryland; and his son John and his wife Brenda of Greensboro, North Carolina. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ross, Megan and Emma Williams, Erin Cross and Ross Frizzell and by his nieces, Birch Martin and Nancy McLaghlan.
He was a servant of God, a help to those in need, and a man of principal who brought energy, passion, grace and goodwill to all whom he touched.
The funeral service was held Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Ivy, Virginia.
